New High School Flag Football Rules
The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) will institute new flag football rules at the high school level beginning with the 2026-27 academic year. The headlining rule change is flag football's version of an onside kick. If the trailing team scores, they have the opportunity to attempt to keep the ball by going for it. The trailing team would have to convert a fourth down from its own 20-yard line to keep possession of the ball, but if it fails, the leading team will gain possession.
NFHS has additional changes, including ensuing kicks after a safety taking place at the 20-yard line instead of the 30-yard line, allowing a 300 x 160 foot playing field, allowing instant replay during postseason games only, allowing teams to finish games with five players, hurdling language changes, and increasing the total timeouts per half from two to three.

Kansas Wesleyan University will also have a new coach this season, with Chris Snyder taking over. Snyder is part of KWU's men's football team and discussed some of the adjustments he's had to make to understand flag football better. Snyder will rely on quarterback Chihiro Iwata to help guide the team again in 2026, after throwing for 4,628 yards, 68 touchdowns, and only 7 interceptions last year. Iwata also had 352 yards and 7 touchdowns on the ground. Kansas Wesleyan posted a season opening win on Saturday, February 21, defeating Hesston College (KS).
