NCCU Talks About Flag Football Club Team Realities
North Carolina Central University is hoping to see its flag football club team elevated to varsity status one day. Those hopes got higher after the NCAA added flag football to the Emerging Sports for Women program in January. The coach and players are advocating for a varsity team, but also acknowledge some of the difficulties. As a club, the team shares limited field and gym space, equipment, and practice schedules with other organizations. The club doesn't receive university funding that varsity teams do, but that would also require the school to provide long-term resources for a sustainable program.
Pair of Alabama State Flag Football Members Get In-Depth Profiles
The Alabama State University flag football program saw its head coach and a wide receiver grab some attention. Head coach Tyrone Poole was highlighted by his former team, the Carolina Panthers. Poole also hopes to become a head coach when a professional league is launched.
ASU wide receiver Ki'lolo Westerlund talked about her journey in an interview with the Montgomery Advertiser. Former ASU head coach Jennifer Constuble noticed how her personality and willingness to help out teammates outshone her on-field accomplishments. Westerlund received a full-ride scholarship and her arrival helped attract more athletes like Jasmine Dunn from Ottawa (KS). Westerlund is glad to help pave the way for future athletes to play the sport in college. One of those athletes is her sister Tiyad'e.
Penn State Flag Football Teams See Growth
The Daily Collegian, Penn State University's student-run newspaper, looked at the growth of flag football at several Commonwealth campuses. The main campus in University Park offers a club team, while Harrisburg and Schuylkill offer varsity programs at the NCAA Division III level. The PSU club team has seen its roster increase to more than 30 players from various sporting backgrounds. Harrisburg head coach Ben Dupree believes that the main PSU campus is likely to add varsity flag football due to the sport's growing popularity.
