Kansas City Chiefs Continue Pushing for Sanctioning in Kansas and Missouri
The NFL's Kansas City Chiefs haven't stopped trying to see flag football become a sanctioned sport at the high school level in Kansas and Missouri. The New York Times recently caught up with the Chiefs' Sheila Sickau about the team's efforts in both states. Sickau noted that there was no initial interest from high schools in either state, but that has changed. Kansas has about 30 teams, while Missouri will approach 50 in the upcoming season.
The initiative in Kansas is more straightforward. The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) will vote in April 2026 on whether (and when) flag football will become a sanctioned varsity sport. In Missouri, a pilot program was approved in April 2025, and flag football could become a sanctioned varsity sport as soon as 2027.
Lewis AD John Ashaolu Talks Flag Football
Collegiate Flag Football recently chatted with Lewis University (IL) Assistant Vice President for Athletics John Ashaolu about the addition of flag football. Ashaolu discussed the thought process behind adding the sport at the NCAA Division II level. He also discussed his expectations for the program, the coaching process, and much more. The full interview can be read here.
NAIA Adopts Rule Changes, IFAF to Establish Rules Committee
The NAIA announced a series of rule changes that will go into effect with the 2026 spring season. The points of emphasis include sideline control, screening action (blocking), and illegal contact. The NAIA also made some additional rule changes and editorial changes to clarify infractions and performance. All rule changes will go into effect with the 2026 spring season.
Meanwhile, the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) announced it will establish a rules committee and propose changes by January 2026. Any changes made by the IFAF will take effect in 2027. Both organizations have or will modify the rules to make illegal contact more understandable for referees.
North Carolina Slowly Moving Towards Sanctioning Flag Football
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) has formed a committee to study and examine adding flag football as a sanctioned sport. The next step for the committee is to send out surveys to member schools to obtain feedback on possibly adding the sport. The NCHSAA previously tabled sanctioning the sport in December 2024, but will review the idea once more in December 2025. The NCHSAA requires 25% of the membership to participate in flag football before it can become sanctioned. Commissioner Que Tucker said the current percentage is "probably pretty close" to the 25% required.
Vermont Club Team Growing
The University of Vermont's flag football club team is seeing plenty of interest, according to a recent article in the school's newspaper. While most of the club is comprised of students who haven't played flag football before, the enthusiasm is high and led club leadership to scrap plans to hold tryouts. Vermont is hoping to play a few games during the spring 2026 season.
