NFL Flag Championships Conclude

The 2025 NFL Flag Championships took place in Canton, Ohio last week with numerous teams claiming titles in their respective division. On the men's side, Brysen Wright's one-handed catch went viral, but Zahra Hill had an equally outstanding catch in the corner of the end zone. The NFL website has highlights from the games on its YouTube channel. Congratulations to all the victors and participants on a fantastic tournament!

Ohio Sanctions Flag Football

The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) will sanction flag football as a championship sport next spring. The announce was made as the NFL Flag Championships got underway in Canton, Ohio. Ohio becomes the 17th state to sanction flag football along with Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Mississippi, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Washington. Another 17 states have a pilot program, including LouisianaIndiana, and Missouri.

Texas Flag Football Update

Last month, Texas's University Interscholastic League (UIL) declined to add flag football as a sanctioned sport, despite the push from the NFL's Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans. According to the Houston Chronicle, the UIL passed on making flag football a sanctioned sport due to low participation numbers. The UIL stated most of the participating teams are located in Austin, Dallas, or Houston. If flag football expands to more areas of the state, then the UIL may reconsider its position.

West Virginia Flag Football

The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) stated in a recent interview that flag football is the sport most likely to become sanction in the state. However, flag football has a long way to go in West Virginia before it will be considered as an official sport. While some players are interested in playing flag football, high schools across the state aren't as eager to participate. That could change if a nearby NFL franchise like the Pittsburgh Steelers decide to promote the sport in West Virginia.
