NFHS Releases First Flag Football Rules Book

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) published the first flag football rules book for the 2025-26 academic year. The NFHS provides rules for 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 games, various field size options, allows for field goals, using a kicking tee, and flag measurements. The new rules provide clarity on how first downs are achieved at the high school level, as noted in the following paragraphs:

While the rules for flag football closely follow NFHS football rules, the rules regarding obtaining a first down are different. Instead of advancing the ball to the line to gain, a first down is awarded in flag football when a team advances the ball to the zone to gain. Following is the language in Rule 5-3 in the NFHS Flag Football Rules Book:

“The zone to gain is the next 20- or 40-yard line in advance of the ball's foremost point when a new series of downs is awarded. When a new series of downs is awarded, the penalties for all fouls (including nonplayer and unsportsmanlike) committed prior to the ready-for-play shall be administered before the zone to gain is established. The zone to gain then remains fixed until the series ends and a new zone to gain is established.”

Tennessee Sanction Flag Football Championship

The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) voted to sanction a permanent flag football championship. The TSSAA's Legislative Council also voted for the sport to be played in the spring. Tennessee is one of 15 states to have sanctioned flag football as a sport at the high school level, and last week's vote helps maintain the sport's growth in the state.

Texas Maintains Status Quo

The University Interscholastic League (UIL) took no action on flag football at its Legislative Council last week. The UIL will continue to study whether to add flag football as a sanctioned sport. The NFL's Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans have launched numerous high school flag football teams around the state this year. The UIL is hoping to see continued growth in the state before making it a sanctioned sport.

15 states have sanctioned flag football at the high school level: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Mississippi, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Washington. 17 states have a pilot program, including Louisiana, Indiana, and Missouri.

United East Seeking Officiating Coordinator

The NCAA Division III United East Conference is seeking an officiating coordinator for women's flag football. The UEC will hire an individual or group to coordinate officials for three years (2025-26 through 2027-28) for regular season and postseason games. Additional information can be found here.
