Minnesota Vikings Partners with Newspaper for Flag Football Coverage
The NFL's Minnesota Vikings are continuing to grow flag football by partnering with the state's well-known newspaper, the Minnesota Star Tribune. The Star Tribune will have a dedicated section for high school flag football, which will cover the upcoming state tournament. Minnesota is not one of the 15 states to have sanctioned flag football, but the Vikings are trying to change that with $600,000 in investments. The Vikings also helped start a collegiate club league earlier this year with six schools from NCAA's Division II and III.
Ottawa's Liz Sowers Discusses Flag Football
Ottawa (KS) head coach Liz Sowers went on the NAIAFBALL podcast to discuss the team's dominance in flag football, recapping the 2025 season, and the growth of the sport. Sowers thinks the college growth will accelerate once flag football becomes even more popular at the high school level. One aspect that Sowers hopes to see change is putting more scholarship money into flag football, which might become a possibility in NCAA Division I. The full 25-minute conversation can be seen on YouTube and is linked here.
Texas Flag Football Push
The University Interscholastic League (UIL) will discuss the growth of flag football at its next Council meeting on June 11. The UIL oversees high school athletics in Texas and is overseen by the University of Texas at Austin. Both the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans have helped grow the sport in their locales this year with more than 80 teams participating.
The UIL may not consider sanctioning the sport just yet as it told the Dallas Morning News, "For the UIL Legislative Council to consider sanctioning any new activity, there needs to be established programs and widespread participation across multiple districts and regions of the state, along with a strong push from member schools. While we haven’t seen that level of development for flag football yet, we look forward to following its continued growth."
15 states have sanctioned flag football at the high school level: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Mississippi, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Washington. 17 additional states have at least a flag football pilot program: Connecticut, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, and Wisconsin.
