The NAIA's first women's flag football season as a championship sport in 2027 will feature a 12-team single-elimination bracket to decide the national championship. The NAIA's National Administrative Council (NAC) made the decision at its meeting on Wednesday, June 17. The NAIA announced on June 17 that women's flag football would move from an invitational sport to a championship sport beginning with the 2026-27 academic year.

The 2026 NAIA Women's Flag Football Invitational featured an 8-team double-elimination bracket. Four of the eight teams received an automatic qualification bid to the invitational, while the other four were at-large selections. The games took place over three days from Thursday, May 7, through Saturday, May 9, at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Warner University (FL) captured its first title and ended Ottawa University's (KS) five-year win streak.

While the biggest news was the NAIA making women's flag football a championship sport, there was also a significant rule change. NAIA coaches proposed nine rule changes at the Women's Flag Football Coaches Association meeting in mid-May. Three of those proposals went forward to the NAC for review at the June meeting, and only one was approved: quarter length will increase from 12 to 15 minutes. It is unclear if the NCAA, NJCAA, and 3C2A will follow in the NAIA's steps and adopt 15-minute quarters.

One of the two denied motions was the proposal to have a 12-team double-elimination format for the 2027 NAIA National Championship. The NAC felt the double-elimination format would "hinder the championship experience and potential hosts by using multiple fields or adding days to the championship." The other denied motion was starting the play clock once the ready-for-play whistle is sounded. The six motions that did not go forward for the NAC to review include:

  • Where possession starts after a touchdown.
  • Adding a flag football version of an onside kick.
  • Changing the flags worn by athletes from Pop Flags to Triple Threat Flags.
  • Increasing the maximum number of games from 18 to 22.
  • Increasing the maximum number of spring scrimmages from 2 to 4.
  • Increasing the maximum number of fall scrimmages from 2 to 5.

The NAIA's first season as a championship sport in spring 2027 will see at least 60 women's flag football teams competing. The NAIA is also set to increase from three conferences to five with the addition of the Heart of America Athletic Conference and Southern States Athletic Conference. Specific details on qualification criteria will be announced later.
