The Cornhuskers also became the first Power 4 team to officially offer a flag football scholarship. Nebraska football head coach Matt Ruhle extended an offer to Makena Cook, who plays quarterback at Orange Lutheran High School in California. If the sport is sanctioned in May, athletes will have to choose whether to play flag football or a different spring sport starting with the first year it is an officially sanctioned sport.

17 states have sanctioned flag football as a varsity sport at the high school level: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Mississippi, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Washington. Another 21 states have a pilot program, including Indiana, Louisiana, and Missouri.
