US National Teams Face Canada in the Rivalry Series
The US National Flag Football Teams took on Canada in the Rivarly Series at the Select Bowl on Friday, June 19. The men's matchup started with Canada taking an 8-0 lead, but it was not indicative of how the rest of the game would unfold. The US men's team held a 28-8 lead at halftime and cruised to a 50-16 victory. Nicholas Casares went 18 of 20 for 219 yards, with 4 touchdowns and no picks. Five different receivers recorded a touchdown catch, while Justin McMullen recorded a pick-six.
The women's game was a back-and-forth affair throughout, although the US suffered a last-second heartbreaking defeat. The US scored a late second quarter touchdown to cut the halftime deficit to 21-19. The second half began with both teams making a defensive stop, and the Americans took their first lead at 27-21 midway through the half on an Izzy Geraci post route. Canada tied the game at 27 on the ensuing drive after some confusion in the US secondary. Team USA scored a touchdown with two minutes remaining to take a 33-27 lead, but failed to convert the two-point attempt. Canada responded by converting a fourth-and-goal attempt with 19 seconds left. The Canadians converted the extra point and recorded a sack on the final play to seal the 34-33 win.
Akemi Higa went 18 of 29 with 203 yards and 3 touchdown passes, while Maci Joncich and Valentina Fanetti both had a touchdown pass. Izzy Geraci led the receivers with 6 catches for 71 yards and 2 scores, and Madison Fulford had 5 receptions for 58 yards and 2 touchdowns. Ashley Edwards recorded the game's lone interception.
Wisconsin Coaches Push for Flag Football Sanctioning
The Wisconsin Football Coaches Association (WFCA) is pushing to have girls flag football become a sanctioned sport in the Badger State. Back in May, WPR reported that at least 35 high schools have active flag football teams, with the Green Bay Packers providing 20 flag football grants annually. The Packers plan to host a state championship this fall.
The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) requires at least 5 percent of members to participate in a sport during the same season before a sport can be considered for sanctioning. A sanctioned tournament requires 10% of the WIAA to sponsor the sport. The Packers and WFCA are hopeful that the sport will be sanctioned within a year, but wouldn't be surprised if it happened in 2028 following the Olympics.
