Saint Mary's (CA) and WCC Eyeing Flag Football?
Saint Mary's College of California President Roger Thompson talked with John Canzano on several topics, including women's flag football. Saint Mary's is a member of the NCAA Division I West Coast Conference (WCC) and is one of three schools in the conference to offer a club team. The other two are the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) and the University of Denver.
"My big push, I don't mind saying it. I introduced it in Vegas, back in the WCC tournament. I hope my colleagues are for it. I want to be the first conference in the country that does women's flag football. That's what I want to do. I see it in the high schools. I probably shouldn't have said it because now somebody's going to beat our league to it... It's a great opportunity for women. It's an emerging sport. It's coming to the LA Olympics in 2028. Maybe it's time we get Snoop Dogg out here talking about it for the WCC.
The WCC would not be the first conference to offer flag football, even at the NCAA Division I level. The Big South Conference will begin sponsoring women's flag football in the 2027-28 academic year. The WCC could be the first NCAA conference west of the Rocky Mountains to offer the sport, should it pursue that goal. The NCAA formally recommended women's flag football as a championship sport in May, with the first championship event likely to occur in spring 2028.
