ACC Talks Flag Football

NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner Jim Phillips talked about the possibility of adding women's flag football at the ACC's Spring Meetings. The Big Ten Conference is "keeping an eye" on flag football and waiting to "let things settle" before sponsoring the sport. The Big Ten's University of Nebraska became the first member from a Power 4 conference to add a varsity team. The Cornhuskers will begin competing at the varsity level in the 2027-28 academic year.

While the NFL's Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans have helped, the state's high school governing body, the University Interscholastic League (UIL), hasn't been as enthusiastic. The UIL declined to sanction flag football in November 2025, July 2025, and June 2025. In June, the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans will co-host the state's first-ever high school flag football championship on the campus of the University of North Texas in Dallas. It will serve as another reminder to the UIL of the growing popularity of flag football in the state.

Louisiana Tech University is considering adding women's flag football, according to a local report by the Lincoln Parish Journal. Flag football is one of four women's sports under serious consideration by the school, with fencing, STUNT, and triathlon also possible additions. However, the lower startup costs place flag football and STUNT at the top of the list. An announcement regarding the addition of flag football could come as soon as this summer.

Minnesota to Consider Making Flag Football an Emerging Sport

The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) will consider making flag football an emerging sport at its next meeting on Tuesday, June 2. Seven schools brought forward the proposal. The Minnesota Vikings and a flag football advisory committee currently oversee the sport in Minnesota. In April, it was reported that over 100 flag football teams were set to compete this spring.

She tallied 85 receptions for 956 yards and 21 touchdowns, while securing 34 flag pulls, 12 interceptions, and 8 pass breakups. Klam helped lead Keiser to a second-straight runner-up in the NAIA Invitational this season.

Sanctioning Push Begins in Idaho

Flag football is still relatively new in Idaho, but that hasn't stopped some from starting the momentum to see the sport become sanctioned at the high school level. Girls Flag 7 is helping start the effort. The organization is a nonprofit in the state that provides athletes with the opportunity to learn the basics of flag football. The Idaho High School Activities Association (IHSAA) has not included flag football in any of its Board Synopsis documents for the 2025-26 school year.

SBCC Concludes First Season

The first season of the Santa Barbara City College (CA) flag football club team is in the books. A recent article looks back on the inaugural campaign, which saw the Vaqueros post a 9-9 overall record. The article also ponders whether the club team will be elevated to varsity status in the future, but that conversation has not happened yet. Founder and captain Alexa Rokos will depart to play at Cal Poly SLO. Fellow captain Carolina Esparza will also depart to play for San Diego State's club team next year.

SDSU President Hope to See Varsity Team

When Lauren Tanner launched the San Diego State University's (CA) women's flag football club team, she wasn't sure how much interest there would be from fellow students. She learned that there was no shortage of interest as the Aztecs began competing in spring 2026. Head coach Jennifer Constuble sees it as a pathway to get more girls interested in the sport. Tanner and her teammates hope to see the club team reach varsity status in the future. See the whole clip from Fox 5 San Diego here.

St. Olaf Recaps Successful First Campaign

St. Olaf College (MN) had a fast start in its first flag football season. The Oles formed a club team earlier this spring and competed in the Midwest College Women's Flag Football League (MCWFFL). St. Olaf nearly won the league as a new team, losing the semifinal matchup to eventual champion Saint Benedict (MN), 13-12. The Oles won the third-place game over UW-Stout 33-27. Part of the team's success was the high interest level among students, as noted by head coach Ryan Townzen. Read the full story about St. Olaf's first season here.

Villa Maria College (NY) women's flag football player Kiki Mercado was named the school's Female Athlete of the Year for the 2025-26 season. Mercado also competed on the women's basketball team. Wisconsin High School Teams Increase With Help From Packers

More girls flag football teams are popping up across high schools in the Badger State. WPR stated that at least 35 schools have active teams, with another "few dozen" interested in forming a team. The interest has led to the formation of regional leagues to provide playing opportunities. The Green Bay Packers awarded 20 flag football grants to high schools each of the last two years. The Packers, like every NFL franchise, ultimately hopes to see the sport become a sanctioned varsity sport in every state. The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) requires at least 5 percent of members to participate in a sport during the same season.
