Graham Naff, Athletic Director at Clemson University (SC), talked about what he thinks the sport of flag football will look like in five years on the Pure Athlete Podcast. Clemson currently has a student-run women's flag football club team, which competed in the Southern Women's Collegiate Flag Football Alliance (SWCFFA) during the 2025-26 academic year.

"By the end of the decade, college women's flag football is going to be a huge deal. We're seeing that it's a sport in the Olympics in 2028 in LA, the NFL is really behind it from an investment from a play safe standpoint in youth leagues, and they're even doing some of the Pro Bowl type stuff. It's really beginning in the high school associations.
Some schools are starting to announce they're starting flag football. I think that's just going to have a rapid rise of opportunity and exposure. It's going to be an awesome thing for our girls in the middle school or high school ranks of what that's going to look like in the future."

Kentucky and North Carolina Sanction Flag Football

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) Board of Control voted to sanction girls flag football as a championship sport beginning with the 2027-28 academic year. Kentucky will play the sport in the spring, as the majority of members voted to contest the season in the spring over fall.

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) Board of Directors voted to sanction girls flag football as a championship sport beginning with the 2026-27 school year. Flag football will be a fall sport, with the first championship set to be held in late 2026.

The NCHSAA sent out a survey in March 2025 to assess the interest in flag football across its membership. The NCHSAA tabled the sanctioning vote in May 2025, but the momentum started building in November 2025 when a committee was formed to study and examine making flag football a sanctioned sport. The NCHSAA further discussed the sport in its December 2025 fall meeting, but took no action. The NFL's Carolina Panthers have been helping build the sport around the state by providing grant funding to programs. David & Nicole Tepper, owners of the Panthers, committed another $1 million to fund high school flag football programs in North Carolina and South Carolina, days after the NCHSAA's decision.

There has been a flurry of states sanctioning flag football in recent weeks, as Kansas, Kentucky Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Washington, D.C., officially elevated the sport to varsity status. 23 states have sanctioned girls varsity flag football at the high school level: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Washington, and Washington, D.C. Another 17 states have a pilot program.
