Horizon League Commissioner Talks Flag Football

Jill Bodensteiner, commissioner of the NCAA Division I Horizon League, spoke very briefly about flag football on the HoriZone Roundtable podcast (after the 32-minute mark). When asked about the conference's potential future sports, Bodensteiner responded immediately with flag football. Purdue University Fort Wayne (IN) will add a club team for the 2026-27 academic year and is currently the only Horizon League school to offer a team.

"The one that's just growing like crazy right now is flag football. I love flag football... I was a four-year starter for our [intramural] flag football at Notre Dame. I am extraordinarily passionate about the sport. I loved it and I loved playing it... So many conferences are talking about adding flag. It's not just about gender equity compliance; it's about participation opportunities for women, and meeting them where their interests lie.
It's a sport that's come a really long way in a short time. The NFL is really getting into it; it's an Olympic sport. When you look at our league and you think about how aligned we are with NFL teams, and original NFL teams, I think there's a lot of opportunity for the conversation on flag. At St. Joe's [Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania], we were able to join the ECAC, which got a grant from the New York Jets. We started a club team just this past year and the interest was great.
It's something that's on my radar for multiple reasons. Beyond that, I've yet to really stare at where we have the most number of affiliates, what are you thinking of adding, what are your biggest clubs, what's happening in your local area? Do we have alignment on flag football or any other sport that people are thinking of? Then seeing what neighboring conferences and others are doing will be important as well."

Kansas City Star Looks at Ottawa's Dynasty

The Kansas City Star took a closer look at Ottawa University's (KS) dynasty since the NAIA began offering flag football in the 2021 spring season. The article details the program's origins, starting with Liz Sowers taking the head coaching role, followed swiftly by her sister Katie. The duo prepared the team to tower over the competition on and off the field in the first few seasons. Ottawa looks to capture a sixth straight NAIA title this week when it competes in the NAIA's Women's Flag Football Invitational as the two seed. You can read the full article on Ottawa's program here.

Missouri Seeing Push to Sanction Flag Football

The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) is on a path to sanction girls flag football. The Kansas City Chiefs have not been shy in their pursuit to see Missouri add the sport, with efforts by the team leading to Kansas sanctioning the sport last week. The MSHSAA voted in April 2025 to make flag football an emerging sport, the first step on the road to becoming a fully sanctioned sport.

The next step is for flag football to become a provisional sport, which will occur in the 2026-27 academic year. Flag football could become a sanctioned varsity sport as soon as the 2027-28 academic year, provided the participation numbers among schools do not decrease, and a vote to approve the sport occurs.

New Jersey Sanctions Flag Football

The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) sanctioned girls flag football as a high school varsity sport beginning with the 2026-27 school year. The sport will be played in the spring. More than 170 schools and 4,200 athletes across the state currently compete. Due to the sanctioning of flag football, the athletes will have to choose flag football or another sport under NJSIAA rules.

New Jersey is the 21st state to sanction the sport, following Kansas, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., which did so last week. The 21 states that have sanctioned varsity flag football at the high school level are: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Washington, and Washington, D.C. Another 19 states have a pilot program.

North Carolina to Vote on Flag Football

New Jersey may not be the only state to sanction girls flag football this week. The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) Board of Directors will meet this week to hold the same vote for North Carolina. The current proposal would have the sport sanctioned beginning with the 2026-27 school year, with flag football played in the fall. In the 2025-26 school year, 135 teams competed across the state. North Carolina would be the 22nd state to sanction girls flag football at the high school level.

Immaculata, North Park Review Respective 2026 Seasons

North Park University (IL) looked back on its inaugural season. NPU didn't have the final record it wanted, going 1-9 overall, but head coach Ramon Palma felt the foundation was set for continued growth over multiple seasons. The Vikings won 24-19 over Benedictine University (IL) on senior night, while having four losses by a touchdown or less.

United East Conference Flag Football Awards for 2026 Season

The NCAA Division III United East Conference announced its All-Conference team and award winners. Gallaudet (DC) won three of the four yearly awards and led with five All-Conference first-team selections. Keystone (PA) had four, Penn State Harrisburg (PA) had three, and Cairn (PA) and Cedar Crest (PA) both had one selection apiece. Cairn highlighted the All-Conference second-team with seven selections, followed by two for Harrisburg. Cedar Crest and Gallaudet each had one second-team selection, while Keystone had no players selected for the second team.

Player of the Year - Citrine Lummer, Gallaudet (DC)

Defensive Player of the Year - Jordan Carpenter, Penn State Harrisburg (PA)

Rookie of the Year - Citrine Lummer, Gallaudet (DC)

Coach of the Year - Emelia Beldon, Gallaudet (DC)
