DC, Kansas, and Maryland Sanction High School Flag Football

On Thursday, the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) sanctioned girls flag football as an official sport beginning with the 2026-27 school year. The first sanctioned season will take place in fall 2026. The Kansas City Chiefs have been pushing to have the sport sanctioned, making a public effort in November 2025 and throughout March and April 2026 in the run-up to the vote.

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) also sanctioned girls flag football as an official sport one day after the KSHSAA. The first varsity season for Maryland will be during the 2026-27 academic year and will also take place in the fall. The MPSSAA will have three separate state championship classifications. Both the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Commanders have been boosting the sport in the DMV region. The Ravens have funded high school programs on multiple occasions, while the Commanders have committed financial resources to help reach the goal.

On Sunday, the Washington Commanders announced that the District of Columbia Interscholastic Athletic Association (DCSAA) sanctioned flag football beginning with the 2026-27 school year.
