Eastern Michigan's Jesse Siordia Q&A Interview
Jesse Siordia, head coach of the women's flag football team at Eastern Michigan University, recently did a question-and-answer session with The Eastern Echo. Siordia mentioned that the school planned to announce flag football sooner, but delays led to Nebraska announcing before EMU. He also spoke about the challenges related to starting a new program, although he has experience with that particular part from his time at Siena Heights University (MI).
Speaking of Siena Heights, Siordia noted that 8 former players transferred to compete at Eastern Michigan. The Eagles will begin playing at the College Football Playoffs in Las Vegas in mid-January. The school is also planning to compete at the Fiesta Bowl Flag Football Classic in April 2027. The full interview can be found here.

Nearly 40 Montana high schools competed during this fall's flag football season, an increase from 28 during the 2025 fall season. The MHSA states that a vote will occur on whether to sanction a sport, keep it in provisional status, or remove the emerging designation.

South Carolina Grows Closer to Sanctioning Flag Football
A recent report shed light on the growth of flag football in South Carolina. Approximately 70 schools are playing flag football this fall, with more than 100 expected to compete in the 2027 fall season. The Carolina Panthers have been helping support flag football in the state and were instrumental in getting the sport sanctioned in neighboring North Carolina.
Flag football is already a pilot program, and South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) rules require only 16 teams to have a sanctioned championship. Once the SCHSL activities committee recommends the sport for sanction, a vote by the executive committee could be held as soon as January 2027. Girls flag football could be sanctioned as soon as the 2027-28 school year, but it could be pushed back to the 2028-29 school year if there are any delays. Even though flag football isn't sanctioned, that hasn't prevented colleges and universities across the state from adding the sport.
Texas Passes on Sanctioning Flag Football, Will Add Pilot Program
The University Interscholastic League (UIL), the Texas governing body for public high school sports, did not sanction girls flag football at its latest meeting. Instead, the UIL will add a pilot program, which will begin no later than the 2028-29 school year. The pilot program will allow up to two classifications. It's not clear how many schools will participate and when flag football will be played.
The UIL has been tepid in its push to sanction flag football, declining to do so on three previous occasions. 25 states, including Washington, D.C., have already sanctioned girls flag football at the varsity level. The Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans have been actively growing flag football throughout the state in the past few years.
