Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Texas Champions Crowned

Massachusetts had three separate Divisions for its flag football championship, which the New England Patriots hosted. In Division I, St. Mary's defeated Leominster 12-6 to win its third straight title. Fitchburg captured the Division II Championship after rallying to win a 15-14 game against Peabody. The Division III title went to Boston Cathedral, which posted a 36-0 victory over Pentucket. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) hasn't sanctioned flag football as a varsity sport.

In Minnesota, second-seeded Rosemount crushed 13th-seeded Rogers 45-12 to win the state title. It was a tournament full of close games and upsets, with top-seeded Washburn losing its quarterfinal matchup against Park Cottage Grove. Rogers defeated Park Cottage Grove 22-21 in quadruple overtime to advance to the final. Rosemount needed overtime to win its quarterfinal against Minnetonka and defeated Centennial 20-14 in the semifinal. The Minnesota Vikings hosted this year's tournament at TCO Stadium in Eagan. The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) recently tabled a proposal to make flag football an emerging sport in the state, but will discuss it again in October.

In New Jersey, second-seeded Bayonne rallied from a 19-0 deficit to defeat top-seeded Ridgewood 20-19 to win the state title. Ridgewood had won the previous three titles, but that came to an end with a winning two-point conversion in the waning seconds. The Championship was held at Kean University in Union, New Jersey.

In the Lone Star State, Rockwall-Heath defeated Houston Memorial 25-6 to win the first-ever Girls Flag Football Texas State Championship. Houston Memorial scored first to go up 6-0, but Heath responded late in the first half with a long touchdown on a shovel pass to take a 7-6 lead at the break. An early second half touchdown followed by a pick-six gave Heath an insurmountable 19-6 lead with under four minutes remaining. Fittingly, Heath had a pick-six as the game expired to reach the final 25-6 scoreline.

Nebraska Commit Ariana Akey Wins Player of the Year

Ariana Akey was named the 2025-26 MaxPreps National Player of the Year in flag football. She went 38-0 as a varsity starter, threw for nearly 9,000 yards, and amassed more than 200 total touchdowns. Akey committed to the University of Nebraska in April, and she credits her relationship with Nebraska head coach Liz Sowers for her commitment. Akey bested Mariah Harrision (Central HS in Phenix City, AL), Jaylani Palmer (Shadow Ridge HS in Las Vegas, NV), Samaya Taylor-Jenkins (Hamilton HS in Chandler, AZ), and Daisy Throckmorton (McClatchy HS in Sacramento, California) to win the Player of the Year honors.

NFL Names Director of Collegiate Flag Football Development

The National Football League named former Michigan State athletic director Alan Haller as Senior Director of Collegiate Flag Football Development. The NFL has already been active in college flag football, providing grants to many teams through RCX Sports. Brand Velocity Group (BVG) acquired RCX earlier this month. The NFL is also partnering with NIRSA to have a dedicated Women's Flag Football Club League, which will kick off in the 2026-27 academic year. NIRSA already has 44 club teams signed up for the 2027 spring season, and is expecting more than 50 for the first season.

Texas Talks Flag Football

The University Interscholastic League (UIL), the governing body of high school athletics in Texas, continued dialogue regarding the sanctioning of girls flag football. Hannah McNair, the CCO and vice president of the Houston Texans Foundation, spoke at the UIL's summer meeting. No vote on flag football was expected at last week's meeting. The UIL will meet again in October, where flag football could become a sanctioned sport, but that is not guaranteed. The earliest that flag football could become a varsity sport in Texas is the 2027-28 school year.

The UIL has declined to sanction flag football three times in the past year, including in November 2025, July 2025, and June 2025. The Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans have both been actively growing the sport in the state, with El Paso also seeing significant growth. The two NFL franchises co-hosted the first-ever Girls Flag Football Texas State Championship last weekend in Dallas. 23 states have sanctioned girls flag football in the US.

US Women's National Team Receives Another Donation, Final Trials This Week

The US Women's Flag Football National Team received another donation from a prominent sports figure. Cuban's donation comes just a few weeks after Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers also donated to the national team.

The US national teams will also take part in the 2026 Rivalry Series against Canada on Friday, June 19. The games will help coaches make the final decisions for their respective 12-athlete rosters. The players who make the final rosters will have a chance to compete in international competition, which includes the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships. Those games will take place from Thursday, August 13, through Sunday, August 16, in Düsseldorf, Germany.
