Interview With Brianna Hernandez-Silva
Melissa Forziat of Take the Doughnut recently spoke to Brianna Hernandez-Silva, who is a member of the US Women's Flag Football National Team. She spoke about her journey in flag football, which began as a freshman in high school. Hernandez-Silva was looking for another sport other than softball and ended up trying out as quarterback for the flag football team. She discusses how the sport has grown across the country since she began competing.
Hernandez-Silva discussed her busy schedule, which includes multiple training sessions, rewatching film, and holding a job to help fund her flag football career. She is hopeful that she and others will be able to focus solely on flag football for a career path in the near future. Hernandez-Silva provides some sage advice for younger athletes, including pursuing competitive tournaments, learning to love the process, and making connections. The full interview can be found on YouTube and is part of a larger series on the channel aimed at sharing stories from Olympic hopefuls.
Jets EmpowHER Documentary Looks Inside ECAC

The formation of the ECAC's flag football league was announced in December 2025, as 15 teams participated in the first season. The documentary started with media day at the end of February, with viewpoints provided by flag football players, college administrators, and NFL personalities.
The film follows several teams as the season unfolds in March and April and focuses on the season-ending tournament at the beginning of May. Players and coaches spoke to the film crew before the two semifinal games, which were won by Franciscan (OH) and Marymount (VA). The two teams played a back-and-forth game, as Marymount won the first ECAC title 37-26. The documentary wrapped up by looking at flag football's future and the expected growth in the coming years.

Nebraska HC Liz Sowers Talks About First Season Roadmap
Liz Sowers, the women's flag football head coach at the University of Nebraska, spoke about the program's first season with the Huskers Radio Network. Sowers provided insight into Nebraska moving the timeline up from 2028 to 2027 due to the new NCAA Division I eligibility rules allowing students to compete for as many as five seasons. Sowers expressed excitement about the roster, including freshman quarterback Ariana Akey, and building the team from the ground up.
Sowers noted the team will practice in September, stating each player's position will be determined in the fall and preseason in the run-up to the games in January. Sowers talked about the makeup of the roster, especially with multiple quarterbacks to add wrinkles on offense. Opposing defenses should expect a lot of scrambling from Akey as a way to extend plays and open up passing lanes.
Nebraska will compete in the iFlag and College Football Playoff Flag Football Showcase in January as part of the college division. The illuminating 15-minute interview can be seen here.
Nebraska was also the subject of an article in The Athletic. The piece looked at Liz Sowers' journey in the sport, the obstacles she faced, and how the flag football program was created at the school. Of note, the Sowers sisters were close to taking the coaching positions at Cal Poly until the Cornhuskers called. The article also dives into the roster construction for the first season and some of the logistics for the flag football facilities. The full article can be found here.
