HBCU Conferences Explore Flag Football Showcase

The four NCAA HBCU Conferences are exploring an HBCU Women's Flag Football initiative that could result in an annual event for the sport. The four conferences made the announcement as part of the HBC4Us Summer Meeting last week. No additional details or timeline were provided. Three of the four NCAA HBCU conferences have announced the sponsorship of women's flag football. The NCAA Division I MEAC and Division II SIAC will begin sponsoring the sport in the 2026-27 academic year. The D-II CIAA will sponsor women's flag football at the varsity level for the first time in 2026-27 after two years at the club level.

The NCAA D-I SWAC is the only conference in that quartet that does not sponsor women's flag football. Five SWAC members offer flag football: Alabama State University and Mississippi Valley State University offer varsity teams, while Florida A&M University, Prairie View A&M University (TX), and Texas Southern University offer club teams.

IFAF and Nike Partnering Up, World Championships This Week

The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) and Nike have agreed to a partnership that will make Nike the exclusive performance apparel partner of IFAF Flag Football staff and International Technical Officials. Nike will provide apparel at all major flag football events for the next two years. Nike is already the uniform provider for the Canada, Great Britain, and Mexico national teams. Nike will also serve as an official partner for the 2027 IFAF Flag Football Continental Championships.

The 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships will take place in Düsseldorf, Germany, this week from Thursday, August 13, through Sunday, August 16. The top two teams from both the men's and women's side tournaments will qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Should the United States finish first or second, the third-place team will qualify instead, as the US is already qualified as hosts. The final three spots will be determined in the Olympic Qualifier Series in June 2028. The IFAF also announced that Nigeria will not compete at the World Championships due to visa issues. The men's and women's teams will still have a chance to reach the Olympics via the Q-Series path.

Minnesota High School Flag Football Update

The Minnesota Star Tribune looked at some of the issues for the Minnesota high school flag football sanction push. In the article, some athletic directors felt the push was too quick and had two important unanswered questions. First, will the format be 5-on-5 or 7-on-7? The current format is 5-on-5, while the NFHS says flag football must be 7-on-7. Second, will flag football be played in the fall or spring as a varsity sport? The sport is currently played in the spring.

In early June, the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) tabled the proposal to make flag football an emerging sport. The Minnesota Vikings currently run the sport along with the Girls Football Advisory Committee. Should flag football become an emerging sport, it would be another two to five years before reaching varsity status. Once that happens, the MSHSL would oversee the sport and run a state championship. Some schools continue to push for sanctioning, while the MSHSL will vote on elevating flag football to an emerging status in October or December.

National Team Captains Named

USA Football named the Flag Football National Team captains for the upcoming IFAF Flag Football World Championships. The men's team will be captained by Aamir Brown and Darrell "Housh" Doucette III. The women's team will be led by Ashlea Klam and Deliah Autry-Jones. All four players have competed on the national team for at least four years. Both national teams will take the field on Thursday, August 13.

NCAA Approves Flag Football Budget Allocation

The NCAA Board of Governors approved two measures ahead of the women's flag football proposal at the NCAA Convention in January 2027: funding for a National Collegiate Championship and a sport committee. Since the first championship will be considered a National Collegiate Championship, the oversight will be under NCAA Division I for the 2027-28 academic year. In May, the NCAA formally recommended that women's flag football become a championship sport, with all three divisions sponsoring legislation at next year's convention.

NCAA Divisions 1 and 2 Adopt New Eligibility Rules

NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II now have new eligibility rules. The updated rules allow for five seasons of eligibility, which start when the student-athlete enrolls full-time at any college or university or the academic year that begins immediately after their 19th birthday. There are limited exceptions, including active-duty military service, pregnancy, and religious missions. (Note: These eligibility rules could change depending on legal challenges.)

NFL Continues Making Flag Football Push in Australia

The NFL announced a new agreement with American Football Australia. The partnership between the two will see all current flag football school programs become NFL FLAG-branded and will become part of the Australian Sports Commission's National Sport Schools program. The NFL has a vested interest in promoting the sport in Australia, with the 2032 Olympic Games set to be held in Brisbane. The NFL would like to see the sport return for a second straight Games after it debuts at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The initial sports programme for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics is expected later in 2026.

Washington Commanders Sponsoring More Schools in Virginia

The NFL's Washington Commanders will support 51 new high school flag football programs in Virginia this fall. Washington supports more than 175 teams in the DMV region. The Commanders will also receive financial support, uniforms, clinics, camps, championship celebrations, and protective headbands. The Commanders are working to have flag football become a sanctioned varsity sport by the Virginia High School League (VHSL). 23 states currently offer girls high school flag football as a sanctioned sport.

West Coast Schools Featured in AP Article

The Associated Press posted an article about the growth of women's collegiate flag football. In the article, Cal Poly and UCLA were featured. Maci Joncich, who transferred from the University of Florida to Cal Poly, expressed excitement about the NCAA likely adding women's flag football as a championship sport in 2028. Her head coach, Rod Sherman, spoke about how the game is giving girls and women more athletic opportunities.

Also featured was UCLA's Tenley Hill, who helped start the school's club team ahead of the 2025-26 academic year. She is also excited for the sport's growth and sees flag football as a chance for athletes to try out a sport they wouldn't have been able to in the past.
