Missouri Moves Closer to Sanctioning Flag Football
The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) voted to make girls flag football a provisionally interscholastic sport for the 2026-27 academic year. In Missouri, a sport reaches a provisional interscholastic classification when at least 50 schools across three or more districts sign up to participate. Flag football became an emerging sport in Missouri last year when MSHSAA members approved a pilot program.
The path to sanctioning is straightforward: if flag football remains a provisionally interscholastic sport for two years, a proposal will appear on next year's annual ballot. Two-thirds of the MSHSAA membership must approve the measure for flag football to become a fully interscholastic sport in Missouri. The first MSHSAA championship could happen as soon as the 2027-28 school year.
23 states have sanctioned girls varsity flag football at the high school level: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Washington, and Washington, D.C. Missouri is one of 17 states that have flag football pilot program.
